Agriculture and rural development sector at the heart of the Government Meeting

The Prime Minister, Mr. Aïmene Benabderrahmane, chaired, on Wednesday, a government meeting devoted to the examination of questions related to the agriculture and rural development sector, according to a press release of the Prime Minister’s Office:

“The Prime Minister, Mr Aïmene Benabderrahmane, chaired, on Wednesday 8 February 2023, a government meeting held at the Government Palace, devoted to the agriculture and rural development sector.

A draft law on forests and forest resources:

The government has examined, in first reading, a draft law on forests and forest resources, presented by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The aim of this draft text is to update the law on the management of the country’s forestry resources with a view to making better use of them from an economic, social and environmental perspective.

It includes a stronger focus on the principles of :

– The management of the forest heritage, which is part of Algeria’s commitments to protect biodiversity, adapt to climate change and combat desertification,

– The economic management of the forest heritage based on a renewal of its productivity and its management tools,

– The protection and preservation of the national forestry potential and the extension of forest cover.

A draft executive decree on the provision of a parcel of state forest in the Green Dam for the benefit of an open penal establishment:

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development presented, in addition, a draft executive decree making available a parcel of the state forest in the Green Dam for the benefit of a penitentiary establishment for its exploitation in the form of an open environment, making it possible to strengthen and modernise the public service in the justice sector.

Outcome of the Agricultural Wealth Assessment:

The Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development made a presentation on:

(i)- The census of agricultural holdings and cereal production

(ii)- Agricultural land, (iii) – National livestock,

(iv)- Milk production.

This assessment is part of the periodic monitoring of data on the agricultural sectors and the review of economic and social indicators related to the regular supply of the market. In this respect, the first results of the different operations of census of our agricultural wealth were reviewed as well as the implementation of the decisions taken in terms of improving the performance of the agricultural sectors of cereal growing, breeding and dairy farming.

This periodic assessment makes it possible to respond to the concerns of promoting modern agriculture based on raising the level of production and productivity of the agricultural sectors in order to strengthen the basis for food security.
