Algeria elected to membership of UNICEF Executive Board and United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs

Algeria was elected yesterday, Tuesday, to membership of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), as well as the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs, starting from January 2021.

According to a tweet by the Algerian mission to the United Nations, Algeria was elected unanimously by all members of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, to membership of the UNICEF Executive Board, for a 3-year term, and to the United Nations Committee on Narcotic Drugs, for a 4-year term, starting from last January.

The Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund is the legislative body for UNICEF, and it is responsible for providing government support and overseeing UNICEF activities, in accordance with the instructions of the General Assembly and the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

The board meets three times a year, with the first ordinary session being held in January, the annual session in June, and the second ordinary session being held in September.

The Commission on Narcotic Drugs was established by an economic and social decree, in 1946, to assist the Economic and Social Council in overseeing the implementation of international drug control treaties, while the United Nations General Assembly expanded, in 1991, the powers of the Commission on Drugs and Crime to enable it to operate as an administrative body for the United Nations office on drugs and crime.
