Algeria expresses concern over the upsurge of terrorist attacks in several Sahel countries

Algeria expressed its concern over the “upsurge, frequency and seriousness” of terrorist acts committed in recent weeks in the Sahel-Saharan countries.

The Ministry of  Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad said in a statement that “the resurgence, frequency and seriousness of terrorist acts that sisterly Sahelo-Saharan countries have recorded in recent weeks and days are of great concern to Algeria,”

The statement added that “these terrorist acts, which are directed against civilian populations, are tantamount of crimes against humanity and constitute alarming threats to the collective security of the African continent and to international peace and security,”.

It stressed that “Algeria vigorously condemns the terrorist attacks that have once again plunged the brotherly peoples of Burkina Faso and Mali into grief and sorrow, after those that targeted the brotherly people of Niger,”.

“Algeria, which hosts the structures for promoting pan-African security, namely the African Centre for Study and Research on Terrorism (ACSRT) and the African Police Cooperation Mechanism (AFRIPOL), calls, as part of its mandate as Coordinator of the African Union for the fight against terrorism, for increased mobilization to further operationalize and strengthen the continental response to this scourge,”

The statement concluded by saying that “in this spirit, the African Union must be able to rapidly stimulate a vast effort of cooperation and mutual aid to preserve human life and dignity throughout Africa,”.
