Algeria PM on a working visit to Libya

Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ramtane Lamamra paid a working visit to Libya on Sunday, holding bilateral talks with senior Libyan authorities and participating in the periodic consultation meeting of Arab foreign ministers held in Tripoli, the ministry said in a statement.

At the beginning of his visit, which comes at the invitation of his Libyan counterpart, Najla Al-Mangoush, Lamamra was received by the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Younes Al-Menfi, to whom he conveyed the greetings of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboun, who reiterated “his commitment, in his capacity as President of the Arab Summit, to work to strengthen solidarity with Libya, a brotherly country, and to contribute to efforts aimed at enabling the Libyan parties to reach a peaceful solution able to put an end to the current crisis and guarantee the return of this brotherly and neighbouring country to its position at the regional and international levels,” according to the same source.

Lamamra also held talks with his Libyan counterpart, Najla Al-Mangoush, with whom he discussed the fraternal Algerian-Libyan relations and the prospects for their reinforcement, in addition to issues of common interest at the continental level.

Lamamra’s participation in the consultation meeting of Arab Ministers of Foreign Affairs provided an opportunity to discuss the implementation of the decisions of the Arab Summit, held last November in Algiers, and the latest developments on the Arab scene.

“The meeting, which was attended by UN and AU representatives, focused on the evolution of the political process in Libya and ways to unify UN and African efforts in cooperation with neighbouring countries in order to reach a consensus that would allow the Libyan parties to achieve an inclusive national reconciliation and hold democratic elections that would put a definitive end to the crisis,” the statement said.

The meeting also focused on consolidating joint Arab action and updating its mechanisms, in line with the constructive recommendations adopted at the Algiers Arab Summit on the initiative of President Tebboune.

On the sidelines of the consultative meeting, Lamamra met with his Tunisian counterpart, Othman Jerandi, the Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, as well as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Abdoulaye Bathily.

Held under the chairmanship of the Libyan Head of Diplomacy, Najla Al Mangouch, this ministerial meeting falls within the framework of the Arab League’s practices, allowing the State holding the rotating presidency of the Ministerial Council to host and organise consultative meetings of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the member countries, with a view to consolidating coordination on the issues on the agenda of the joint Arab action.
