Algeria, reliable partner for European Union

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell said Monday, in Algiers, that Algeria was a reliable partner and a key player in the fight against terrorism, announcing that Algeria and the European Union had agreed to revive high-level dialogue on security.

“It is very important to say that we have agreed to relaunch our high-level security dialogue and the first meetings will be held before the end of this year,” Borrell said after an audience with the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

“This proves that Algeria is a reliable partner and a key player in the fight against terrorism in our common neighbourhood,” he added, noting that Algeria has “a long history in the fight against terrorism”.

“We would like to develop a global and strategic vision” in the fight against terrorism, Mr Borrell said, calling for “mutual coordination and support for security actions and joint efforts to strengthen stability in our common environment and neighbourhood, particularly in the Sahel”.

” As you notice, there are numerous subjects to deepen our partnership and we have the will to do it “, he said, calling on Algeria to join the efforts to reach a solution to the crisis in Ukraine.

On another level, Mr Borrell said that the fight against corruption and money laundering is “an important priority for both EU and Algeria”, stressing that he had exchanged views (with President Tebboune) on the issues of “ill-gotten gains” and “illicit financial transfers”.

“I am absolutely convinced of the need to strengthen our cooperation in these areas with the Algerian government,” he said.

On the economic level, he said that Algeria and the EU have a partnership that “works well” in the energy sector, affirming that “90% of Algerian gas exports go to Europe, which considers Algeria a reliable partner for having stood by Europe in difficult times.

“We want to develop this relationship with Algeria by looking to the future, giving priority to European investments in the renewable energy sector,” he said, noting that Algeria has a “promising future” as it has an “enormous potential” in the field of renewable energy.

According to Mr Borrell, “more than half of Algeria’s foreign trade is with EU member states, i.e. 56% of exports and 43% of imports”, saying that both parties “can improve”.

Mr Borrell also welcomed Algeria’s election to the United Nations Human Rights Council, which he described as a “very important” institution.
