Algeria runs to chair a committee to draft the international convention on countering the criminal use of information and communication technologies

Belkacem Zeghmati, Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, revealed today, Monday, that Algeria has submitted its candidacy to chair the committee dedicated to draf a comprehensive international convention on countering the criminal use of information and communication technologies in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly resolution.

During his participation in the 14th United Nations Conference on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice held in Tokyo (Japan), Mr. Zeghmati said that Algeria “expresses its extreme concern about the worrying trend of cybercrime, and welcomes the creation of the Ad Hoc Committee to draft a comprehensive international convention on countering the criminal use of information and communication technologies under United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 74/247, adding that Algeria has submitted its “candidacy for the presidency of this committee.”

The minister, who delivered his speech using remote conferencing technology, considered that Algeria, which welcomes the topic of the conference, “remains convinced that sustainable development and the rule of law are closely interlinked and reinforce each other”, adding that Algeria “also adheres to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and to its protocols, and it also constantly strives to harmonize its national legal system with relevant international standards and conventions ”

Algeria acknowledges, as the minister added, “the role the review mechanism plays in improving the implementation of the two United Nations conventions against corruption and combating transnational organized crime and in providing technical assistance and cooperation to countries that need them.”
