Algeria “strongly” condemns massacre perpetrated in DR Congo

Algeria has “firmly” condemned the massacre perpetrated by armed groups in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), “whose appalling toll in loss of human life is a powerful challenge to the requirement to protect civilians in conflict zones,” said a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad on Tuesday.

“Algeria strongly condemns the horrific massacre which has just been committed by armed groups in the region of Kishishe, in North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, whose appalling toll in the loss of human lives calls powerfully to the requirement to protect civilians in conflict zones,” the statement read.

“In these difficult circumstances, Algeria presents its sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and its wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured, assuring the Congolese people and Government of its solidarity,” added the same source.

“Algeria, which stresses the imperative need for respect for international humanitarian law in all circumstances, calls on the various parties to the conflict to calm down and exercise restraint, as well as to pursue dialogue, with a view to finding a peaceful response to the current crisis in the eastern region of the DRC,” the statement concluded.
