Algeria: UN Security Council should take a “firm stance” to end the occupation in Palestine

Algeria affirmed, today, Sunday, that peace cannot be achieved in Palestine if the international community, especially the Security Council, does not take a “firm and courageous” stance, to revive the political settlement process to end the occupation of the Palestinian territories and allow the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Al-Qods Al-Charif as its capital.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sabri Boukadoum reiterated, in a speech during the proceedings of the emergency meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held via videoconference, Algeria’s strong and explicit condemnation of the barbaric acts committed by the occupation forces against the Palestinian people, stressing its “principled and firm stance in backing the just Palestinian cause.” and its support for the Palestinian brothers in these difficult circumstances.

Mr. Boukadoum called on the international community, and in particular the Security Council, to assume its historical, legal and moral responsibilities in protecting the Palestinian people. He also called for immediate action to be taken to put an end to killing and destruction machine and to stand against the brutal attacks on the lives and property of this brotherly people and to ensure the respect of international law.

The minister pointed out that this emergency meeting comes a day after the anniversary of the Nakba, and amid the continuing systematic criminal attacks against our Palestinian brothers in occupied Jerusalem, the West Bank and the rest of the occupied territories, with the intensification of the barbaric shelling of the besieged Gaza Strip, leaving a large number of martyrs and wounded including children and women, as well as the massive destruction of the infrastructure, He expressed his hope that the meeting would allow the mobilization of resources and energies of the organization and direct them to serve the Palestinian cause. ”

Mr. Boukadoum said, “These blatant attacks that overtly violate all international laws and standards, human rights charters and international humanitarian law, put the credibility of the multilateral international system at stake again,” noting that “the immunity granted to the occupation ushers-in a persistence in committing the most heinous crimes and continuing its racist policies thus undermining the prospects for a just and lasting solution, ” in addition to“ the aggravation of the situation in the entire region, as confirmed by the current events. ”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized again, that “the Palestinian issue was and remains our central issue,” noting that while attention is focused on “the priorities of the current stage of the necessity to stop the brutal aggression and to quickly take care of the catastrophic humanitarian crisis behind it,” we should not forget or pretend to forget the root causes of the conflict. ”

He underlined, in this respect, that the occupation of the Palestinian territories and the attempts to establish the logic of force and the policy of fait-accompli at the expense of the Palestinian people are the main reasons behind the suffering of the Palestinian people for more than seven decades.

Therefore, our conviction – Boukadoum added – is “firmly established that peace cannot be achieved without taking a firm and courageous stance by the international community, especially the Security Council, to revive the political settlement process, which would enable ending the occupation of the Palestinian territories and allowing the Palestinian people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and the establishment of his independent state, with Al-Qods Al-Charif as its capital.
