Arkab takes part in International Forum “Towards the South: European Strategy for a New Geopolitical, Economic, Socio-Cultural season in the Mediterranean”

The Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab who is accompanied by a delegation consisting of the CEOs of Sonatrach and Sonelgaz groups participated today, Friday, May 13, 2022, in Sorrento (Italy), in the proceedings of the international forum “Towards the South: the European strategy for a new geopolitical, economic, socio-cultural season in the Mediterranean” , in addition to a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headed by the Special Envoy in charge of Economic Diplomacy Mr. Abdelkrim Harchaoui,.

This international event, organized by the Italian Ministry for the South and Regional Cohesion in cooperation with the Italian think tank “The European House-Ambretti”, was attended by the President of the Italian Republic, Mr. Sergio Mattarella, and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Mr. Roberto Fico, as well as the Prime Minister, Mr. Mario Draghi, and many Italian government ministers as well as many decision makers from the academic, political, economic and international worlds.

The role of infrastructure investments in the south and the Mediterranean was among the topics that were discussed, some models were put forward to enhance their development, the challenge of human capital in facing the challenge of energy and digital transformation, as well as climate change.

The forum was an opportunity for interactive meetings and exchanges on ways and means of developing concrete actions to create a strategic platform at the Mediterranean level for southern Italy and Europe.

During this forum, the Minister of Energy and Mines stressed the main role of the energy and mining sector as a driver of economic development and the importance of cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector in the region, noting that the energy and mining sector in Algeria is an open sector for investment through a stimulating legal framework that provides many partnership opportunities in many fields.

He also highlighted Algeria’s many efforts to develop capabilities across the hydrocarbon chain through significant investments, which are part of an approach aimed at strengthening Algeria’s role as a reliable supplier that ensures safe and continuous supplies.

The Minister also expressed Algeria’s commitment to a gradual energy transition by diversifying the current main energy sources and integrating low carbon footprint energies in the energy mix such as renewable energies, electricity and hydrogen, and that a national strategy for hydrogen development is in underway.
