Army General Said Chanegriha supervises the opening of an international forum on the geopolitics of extremism

Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, General Said Chanegriha, supervised, today, Saturday at the Army National Club in Beni Messous (Algiers), the inauguration of the proceedings of an international forum on “The Geopolitics of Extremism: Contexts, Threats, Challenges and Confrontation Mechanisms”, according to a statement by the Ministry of Civil Defense.

The statement indicated that the opening of this forum, which is organized by the “Institute of Graduate Studies in National Security over a period of two days, under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Minister of National Defense, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, took place in the presence of members of the government and advisors to the President of the Republic, in addition to the Dean of the Algiers Mosque, the President of the National Observatory for Civil Society and the Director General of the National Institute for Comprehensive Strategic Studies.

The forum was also marked by the presence of “the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defense, commanders of the forces and the national gendarmerie, the commander of the 1st Military Region, heads of departments, directors and heads of central departments in the Ministry of National Defense and the staff of the People’s National Army, as well as Algerian and foreign professors and experts.”

At the outset of the event, Army General Changeriha delivered the first introduction speech in which he expressed his “thanks and gratitude to the President of the Republic for his patronage of this international forum, after which he analyzed the phenomenon of extremism that is not linked to one religion or another, or to a society or another, or even to one ideology over another.”

He considered that the phenomenon of extremism is “historical and characterized by mutation and complexity. It also takes different forms of expression and is based on different intellectual and ideological premises, according to time and place, but it shares some belief-based premises.”

Mr. Chanegriha also evoked Algeria’s experience in dealing with extremism by combating terrorism, being able to “thwart the malicious strategies that targeted the state entity through this scourge,” praising in the same context, the Algerian diplomacy which contributed to “enhancing international awareness of the criminal nature of terrorism.”

He went on to say, “Algeria suffered for a whole decade from the scourge of terrorism that threatened the pillars of the state and its republican system, the safety of society, its homogeneity, the cohesion of its identity, and ruined its economy”.

The Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army stressed that Algeria, with its citizens, its People’s National Army, and its institutions, defeated terrorism alone, and was able to develop a unique experience in combating and preventing this scourge, whether at the operational level or by developing an integrated and multidimensional national approach.”
