Athletics/African Championships: the competition of Algiers postponed

The African Championships (seniors), due to take place in Algiers from 22 to 26 June, have been postponed to a later date, due to the health situation linked to the Covid-19 pandemic and following “the recommendations” of the scientific committee monitoring the evolution of the pandemic, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MJS) announced on Wednesday.

“Due to the health situation, marked by a rebound in the propagation of the coronavirus pandemic and the risk of the spread of new variant(s), competent authorities, following the recommendations of the scientific committee monitoring the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic, have recommended postponing this event to a later date,” the ministerial department said in a statement.

The African Senior Athletics Championships, initially scheduled to be held in Oran, were to be held from 22 to 26 June at the SATO of the Mohamed-Boudiaf Olympic Complex (Algiers).

The Ministry of Sports called on the Algerian Athletics Federation (FAA) “to take the necessary steps to inform officials of the African Athletics Confederation (CAA), in order to fix new dates for the holding of these championships as soon as the health situation improves”, the statement concluded.

In a recent press release published on its official website, the CAA indicated that it was ” attentive to the Algerian authorities to confirm the date of the championships “, while affirming that the scientific committee for the follow-up of the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic ” is the only body authorised to take a decision in relation to the evolution of the pandemic at the national and regional levels “.
