Attempts to smuggle seven quintals of cannabis from Morocco foiled

A series of attempts to smuggle about seven quintals of cannabis into Algeria through the border with Morocco have been foiled and 58 drug traffickers arrested, in operations carried out by combined detachments of the People’s National Army and security services, over the period of March 1-7, the ministry of National Defence said Wednesday in an operational report.

In the dynamics of the continuous efforts of the fight against terrorism and multiform organized crime, units and detachments of the ANP carried out, during the period from 1 to 7 March 2023, several operations that led to quality results that reflect the high professionalism, vigilance and permanent readiness of our Armed Forces throughout the national territory,” said the same source.

In the framework of the fight against terrorism and securing the borders, “combined ANP detachments arrested 8 elements supporting terrorist groups in separate operations across the national territory”.

In addition, as part of the fight against organized crime and “in continuity of efforts to thwart the scourge of drug trafficking in our country, combined detachments of the ANP have arrested, in coordination with the various security services during operations carried out across the military regions, 58 drug traffickers and thwarted attempts to introduce quantities of drugs from the borders with Morocco, amounting to 6 quintals and 82 kilograms of cannabis , and seized 168586 psychotropic tablets.

 In Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Guezzam, In Salah and Djanet, ANP detachments “intercepted 168 individuals and seized 34 vehicles, 154 generators, 138 pick hammers, 13 metal detectors, 24 quintals of mixed raw gold and stones, as well as quantities of explosives, detonation tools and equipment used in illegal gold panning operations, In addition, 9 other individuals were arrested, and 7 hunting rifles, 19 quintals of tobacco, 7381 units of various drinks and huge quantities of foodstuffs intended for smuggling and speculation amounting to 115 tonnes were seized during separate operations throughout the country.

In addition, the border guards “foiled, in coordination with the Gendarmerie Nationale, attempts to smuggle large quantities of fuel amounting to 7,4803 litres in Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, El-Oued, Souk Ahras, El-Tarf and Tébessa.

On the other hand, the coastguards “foiled, at the national coasts, attempts of clandestine emigration and proceeded to the rescue of 15 individuals on board handmade boats, while 295 clandestine immigrants of various nationalities were arrested throughout the national territory”, notes the MND release.
