Biden declares a state of emergency in Florida due to Hurricane Ian

US President Joseph Biden declared a state of emergency in Florida due to Hurricane Ian and ordered an increase in federal assistance and all available resources to prepare for potential impacts, and to support response and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the Hurricane.

The White House said – in a press release on Wednesday, that the US President directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate through the federal government to support state and local preparations for the hurricane.

The hurricane that swept Cuba, accompanied by violent winds and floods, forced the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes and cut off electricity to all parts of the country, while the hurricane was advancing north towards the US state of Florida, in what could be described as the worst storm to strike Cuba in nearly a century.

The official Cuban media, quoting the technical director of the Electricity Union, Lazaro Gera, reported that a malfunction in the national electricity system linked to the storm affected the infrastructure of the electric networks.
