COVID-19: Algeria detects first two cases of UK coronavirus variant

Two cases of the British variant of coronavirus (Covid-19) have been detected in Algeria, Algeria’s Pasteur Institute said Thursday in a statement.

One of the cases was found in an employee of a mental health hospital and the other in a migrant, who returned from France to attend his father’s funeral.

According to the same statement, earlier analyses were carried out on suspected samples from Bnimessous Hospital and Zmerli Hospital, but their results were negative regarding the four new strains that appeared in Britain, South Africa, Brazil and Japan.

In terms of Covid-19 pandemic situation in the country, Pasteur Institute explained that Algeria has recorded in recent weeks some stability in the number of new cases of Covid-19, but urged people to pay more attention to measures of social distancing and to keep wearing protective masks as part of the health protocol as they constitute best guarantees to preserve currently recorded stability.
