EU position on the Sahrawi issue remains “unchanged”

The European Commission reaffirmed that the European Union’s (EU) position on the Western Sahara conflict is ” well-known and remains unchanged “, underlining its support for the UN’s efforts to achieve ” a just political solution “, in accordance with the Security Council resolutions.

In a response on behalf of the European Commission, its Vice-President and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, stated that “developments in Western Sahara are being followed by the European External Action Service (EEAS) and no change in the organisational chart is planned. The EU’s position on the Western Sahara issue is well known and remains unchanged”.

Borrell reiterated “the EU’s strong support to the UN, its Secretary General and his personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura, in their efforts to pursue the political process aimed at achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution in accordance with the Security Council resolutions”.

The official also said that the EU was “in regular contact with the UN envoy and stands ready to support his efforts to relaunch the negotiation process (between the Polisario Front and Morocco).

Last February, Borrell had once again refuted the allegations of the Moroccan Makhzen regime on the alleged ” misappropriation ” of EU humanitarian aid intended for the Saharawi refugee camps, stressing that the European Commission “has not detected any evidence” on this subject.
