Fixed and mobile Internet: more than 45 million subscribers in the 3rd quarter of 2021

More than 45.30 million fixed (ADSL, FTTH and 4G LTE/Wimax) and mobile (3G and 4G) Internet subscribers were registered during the 3rd quarter of 2021 in Algeria, compared to 43.92 million subscribers the previous quarter, according to the latest report from the Post and Electronic Communications Regulatory Authority (ARPCE).

The number of fixed Internet subscribers exceeded 4.02 million as of September 31, 2021 (3.95 million as of June 30, 2021) and mobile Internet registered more than 41.26 million during the 2nd quarter of 2021 (39.97 million during the 2nd quarter of the same year), details the report, specifying that “91.08% of total Internet subscribers in Algeria are mobile telephone subscribers, compared to 8.92% subscribers of the fixed telephony internet”.

Among the 4.02 million fixed internet subscribers, 2.61 million subscribed to broadband internet (ADSL), 1.28 million to fixed 4G LTE, 136,660 to optical fiber to the home (FTTH) and 443 to Wimax technology, among others.

Out of the overall number of fixed Internet subscribers (4.02 million), 3.94 million were residential subscribers (97.51%) compared to 100,497 professional subscribers (2.49%).

As for subscribers to the various fixed Internet offers, 85.08% had speeds between 4 Mega and 10 Mega in the third quarter of this year (85.27% in the 2nd quarter), 14.44% between 10 Mega and 20 Megas in the 3rd quarter (14.26% in the previous quarter), 0.47% between 20 Megas and 100 Mega in the 3rd quarter (0.42% as of June 30, 2021) and 0.01% over 100 Mega (0.01% as of June 31).

The peaks of the bandwidth consumed reached 1860 Gbps (Gigabit per second) during the third quarter of 2021 compared to 1965 Gbps the previous quarter.

Among the 1,213 million Gigabyte (GB) of overall data traffic consumed in the third quarter of 2021 (992 million GB the previous quarter), 1,088 million GB was consumed by XDSL/FTTH subscribers (889 million GB in the 2nd quarter), 68 million GB by fixed 4G LTE subscribers (65 million GB in the previous quarter) and 57 million GB by FTTH subscribers (38 million in the 2nd quarter).

The average monthly income per DATA subscriber is 972 DA as of September 31, 2021 against 664 Dinars as of June 30 of the same year.

Regarding the mobile internet market, more than 41.26 million active subscribers were recorded during the 3rd quarter of 2021 compared to 39.97 million during the 2nd quarter of the same year.

Of the 41.26 million mobile Internet subscribers, 33.50 million subscribe to the 4G mobile network and 7.75 million to 3G, notes the APRCE, specifying that 97.44% of users have subscribed to voice and Data-type subscriptions compared to only 2.56% of total subscribers subscribed to Data-only offers.

The volume of global Data traffic consumed increased from 496.43 million GB in the second quarter of 2021 to 564.30 million GB in the third quarter of 2021, an increase of 13.67%.

The average monthly volume of data traffic consumed per subscriber increased from 4.14 GB in the second quarter of 2021 to 4.56 GB in the third quarter of 2021, i.e. an increase of 10.11%. The average monthly income per Data subscriber is 218 Dinars (3rd quarter) against 202 Dinars (2nd quarter), notes the balance sheet.

This report has been drawn up according to an Algerian population estimated at 44.04 million and a number of households estimated at 7.34 million as of September 31, 2021.
