Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum: Elections are key to resolving issue of legitimate leadership in Libya

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sabri Boukadoum, affirmed, today, Wednesday, that Algeria firmly believes that the elections are the key to resolving the issue of the (legitimate) leadership in Libya, calling for the need to complete as soon as possible the necessary preparations for this entitlement.

In his speech today, Wednesday, at the second Berlin Conference on Libya, convened under the auspices of the United Nations in the German capital, Mr. Boukadoum said that Algeria “firmly believes that elections are the key to resolving the issue of the (legitimate) leadership and that it will open new horizons for restoring peace and stability in the country.”

In this context, the minister called for “the need to complete as soon as possible the necessary preparations for holding free, fair and secure elections on December 24 of the current year,” explaining that “this includes, in particular, laying the constitutional basis and adopting electoral legislation to ensure that Libyans do not miss this important date”.

At this crucial stage in Libya’s history, the Algerian head of diplomacy expressed his belief that “more efforts are needed to consolidate the hard-earned gains and avoid any form of relapse.”

In his speech, Mr. Boukadoum also stressed the need to reunite Libyan national institutions, especially security ones, which he considered “of great importance not only to the security of Libya, but to the region as a whole.”

Mr. Boukadoum also expressed his “serious concern about the continued violations of the UN arms embargo, as well as the continued delays in the withdrawal of foreign forces and armed groups, including mercenaries.”

Mr. Boukadoum did not miss the opportunity to renew his call to all external parties involved in the conflict to “commit to the results of the Berlin Conference and refrain from fueling division and bloodshed in Libya.”
