In a statement to Spanish media, Laya said in response to a question about Ghali’s reception of treatment in Spain and the reactions it caused: “Of course I will do it again because this is one of the values of our Spanish society, and it is a human tradition in this case as in many other countries.” .
According to “Europe Press”, Laya confirmed that this decision is “important” because it shows that Ghali was treated for humanitarian reasons and in accordance with the law, “and thus ends an issue that should never have happened.”
Gonzalez Laya expressed her regret over the events, saying, “Ghali’s case sparked a great deal of controversy, even though it was a “purely humanitarian” decision and highlighted that Spain has a “very clear” humanitarian tradition.
She continued, “Defending the interests and values of our country has always guided me in my work,” stressing that she sought in the exercise of her duties as Minister to protect Spain’s image and international standing.
