Health Minister emphasizes the importance of preventive programs in combating the phenomenon of obesity in Algeria

Minister of Health, Abdelhakim Sahli, emphasized on Thursday the importance of preventative programs in combating the phenomenon of obesity, which has been on the rise in Algeria in recent years.

During his supervision of the opening of the fourth day of continuous medical training for the Algerian Society of Internal Medicine and the Algerian Society for the Fight against Obesity and Metabolic Diseases, Minister of Health Abdelhakim Sahli stressed the importance of preventive programs in combating the phenomenon of obesity, which has seen an increase in Algeria in recent years. He emphasized the need to “invest more in preventive programs than in therapeutic ones by promoting proper nutrition and encouraging physical activity.”

When he discussed epidemics and diseases that have seen an increase in Algeria in recent years, the Minister pointed to diabetes, which reached – as he said – a rate of 14.4% among the age group of 18 to 69 years, considering that this figure “is likely to rise, based on various national studies.”

The minister also added regarding the obesity phenomenon that “one-third of the prevalent types of cancer in society such as breast, colon, rectum, and prostate cancer are linked to obesity,” indicating that the study conducted by the ministry in coordination with the World Health Organization “proved that 22 percent of people are affected.”

To address this epidemiological situation, the Minister of Health said that the public authorities are working to address this phenomenon through early detection and awareness, which involves following a healthy diet accompanied by physical activity.

He also highlighted the fundamental role that therapeutic education for patients plays in avoiding risks and complications, stressing “the ministry’s permanent efforts to provide all types of drugs that have proven their effectiveness in treating diabetes, arterial hypertension, and other chronic diseases.”
