Historic qualification of Algerian boxers Imane Khelif and Ichrak Chaib in Women’s World Championships

The two Algerian boxers, Imane Khellif (63 kg) and Ichrak Chaib (66 kg), will participate today, Monday, in the quarter-final rounds of the 12th edition of the World Boxing Championship (women), which is takin place in Istanbul, Turkey.

Khellif, who excelled on Sunday by easily overtaking her Lithuanian rival Rosenthal Beatrix by a decision of the referee at the end of the second round, will face the Greek boxer Olga Pavlina in the quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old daughter of the city of Tiaret, who is among the Algerian names known for the ability to honor national colors in international events, continues to shine and achieve good results after snatching the gold medal in the 37th edition of the Stranga tournament that took place last January in Sofia (Portugal).

For her part, the other Algerian boxer, Ichrak Chaib, made the surprise after securing a ticket to qualify for the quarter-finals at the expense of the Korean Showa Ungan (5-0), to face in the quarter-finals, the Polish Regelska Anita in a fight scheduled at around (16:00 h Algeria time).

Meanwhile, the journey of Romaissa Boualem (50 kg) stopped in the round of 16 after losing to the Turkish, Kakiroglu Bos Naz. In the first round, the Algerian boxer had successfully overcome the obstacle of Japanese Shinohara Hikaru (4-1).

Fatiha Mansouri (48 kg category) was also eliminated from the first round after losing to Venezuelan Cadeno Rojas Taiones (0-5).

The Women’s World Boxing Championship opened on Sunday by the President of the International Federation of the Game, Omar Kremlav, with a record participation of 310 boxers representing 73 countries, including Algeria, and competing in 12 weight categories.
