Mali announces its withdrawal from Sahel group and its bodies

Malian government announced on Sunday its withdrawal from all organs and bodies of the G5 Sahel, including the joint force, to denounce the non-holding of the 8th ordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State of the member countries of the institution in Bamako, which should consecrate the beginning of the Malian Presidency of the said organization, indicates a statement from the government.

A statement by the Malian government stated that the objection of some members to the presidency of Mali is due to the association of these countries with a country outside the region that is striving to isolate Bamako.

The Sahel Group, an alliance to coordinate regional cooperation in development policies and security affairs in West Africa, was formed in 2014 and launched its force to combat extremist groups in 2017.

The military force of the Group of Five Sahel countries amounts to 5,000 members.
