In a speech he delivered on the occasion of the inauguration of the memorial commemorating the 60th anniversary of the demonstrations of October 17, 1961  in the municipality of Bab El Oued, the minister explained that “all the decisions of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune associated with the national memory reflect the strong political will in order to defend the collective memory with actions, which is what is highlighted by the endeavors of tradition and the connotations of honoring on this very important day in recognition of the sacrifices of the Algerian immigrants for the sake of freedom and independence and their decisive role in the path of national liberation.”

In the same context, the Minister added that the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the October 1961 demonstrations “confirms once again the determination of the President of the Republic to preserve the deposit of the martyrs and defend their sanctity.” It is also – he adds – “a strong signal to the members of the Algerian community abroad, of the government’s interest in their issues and concerns and its determination to accompany them in the endeavor to build our present and our future.”

On the other hand, Mr. Rebika considered that these demonstrations “revealed once again the inhumane face of the colonial system,” recalling that these tragic events in which colonial France met the peaceful demonstrations of immigrants “will remain a crime that will not be subject to statute of limitations and will be passed down through generations as historians and people of conscience must continue their efforts to search and excavate the hidden aspects of this dark page in the record of the painful events incurred by the Algerian people.”
