Minister of Sports: “We will intervene to cap players’ salaries next season, after consultation with FIFA and CAF.”

Minister of Youth and Sports, Abderrezak Sabgag, revealed today, Thursday, in Algiers, that his sector will intervene to set a threshold to the financial mass of wages allocated to the salaries of players, starting from the next sports season 2023/2024, in consultation with the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) and its counterpart, the African Confederation (CAF).

In response to a verbal question by Parliamentarian Mohamed Mir in the National People’s Assembly regarding “financial incentives offered by some clubs to football players,” the minister said: “These incentives are in force at the national and international level… There is no way to interfere, except in the process of ceiling wages allocated to salaries of players, and this is starting from the next sports season by making amendments to this issue in consultation with the International Federation of Football Associations and its African Confederation counterpart.

The representative of the government considered that this decision falls within the framework of the process of “regulating first-division football clubs in accordance with the laws of FIFA and CAF.”
