Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Accepting membership of Zionist entity as observer in African Union won’t affect the continental organization’s support to Palestinian cause

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad affirmed today, Sunday, that the recent decision of the Chairman of the African Union Commission to accept the membership of the Zionist entity as a new observer state, will not affect the unwavering and effective support of the continental organization towards the just Palestinian cause, stressing that Algeria will continue its efforts to strengthen solidarity between Africa and the Arab world.

A Foreign Ministry statement said today, “The recent decision of the Chairman of the African Union Commission to accept a new observer state, who falls within his administrative powers, would not affect the unwavering and effective support of the continental organization towards the just Palestinian cause, as well as its commitment to empower the Palestinian people to recover its inalienable rights including the right to establish an independent state with Al Qods as its capital.”

The statement stressed that the decision of the African Union, taken without prior extensive consultations with all member states, “does not have any capacity or ability to legitimize the practices and behavior of the new observer, which completely contradict the values, principles and objectives stipulated in the Constitutive Act of the African Union.”

The statement also stated that “the operation mode of the African Union does not give any possibility to the 87 extra-African observer states to influence the positions of the continental organization, the determination of which is the exclusive competence of the member states.”

The statement adds, in this regards, that the media hype on this issue, which is nothing more than a “no event” and a breakthrough with a strategic dimension, cannot harm the basic requirements for achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East as enshrined in Africa and the entire international community, as stipulated in the Arab Peace Initiative approved by the Arab Summit held in 2002 in Beirut, which was fully supported by the African Union.

The Foreign Ministry statement reiterated that “Algeria, which has greatly contributed to establishing and strengthening the strategic partnership between Africa and the Arab world, will continue its efforts to strengthen solidarity between the two groups for the benefit of all their peoples.”

It is worth noting that media reports had revealed yesterday, Saturday, that the Zionist entity was granted observer membership in the African Union.
