Ministry of National Defence: Seizure of 5 quintals of cocaine at Oran coasts

Coast guards of Naval Forces Command in the western waterfront of Oran managed to thwart an attempt to bring in a huge amount of cocaine that was destined to flood Algeria with this dangerous substance. The seized cocaine is estimated at 490,05 kilograms, according to a statement issued by Ministry of National Defence.

The statement read: “In the context of anti-smuggling and anti-organized crime operations, and within the context of securing and protecting our territorial waters, the coast guards of the Naval Forces Command in the western waterfront of Oran managed, on June 26, 2021 at ten o’clock in the evening, to thwart an attempt to bring in a huge amount of cocaine that was destined to flood our country with toxins and drugs.”

The statement added: “The operation was launched following a report sent by  Algerian fishermen, according to which suspicious bags were floating above the surface of sea water. Units of the coast guards in Arzew were sent to the spot 6 nautical miles northwest of Cape Carbone in Oran, where a quantity of cocaine, weighing an estimate of 490,05 kilograms and distributed on 442 packs, was recovered and seized.

It is worth noting that the laboratory analyses of competent authorities of the National Gendarmerie confirmed that the substance is cocaine, while investigations are still ongoing in order to determine the full details related to this criminal attempt, according to the statement of the Ministry of National Defence.
