Ministry of National Defense: Acquisition of water-bomber aircraft to fight forest fires

The relevant services of the Ministry of National Defense have begun negotiating with a Russian company to reach an agreement on the acquisition “as soon as possible” of four multi-role amphibious water bombers, in implementation of the instructions of the President of the Republic, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, according to a statement issued today by the Ministry of National Defense.

The statement indicated that “in the wake of the fires that affected several regions of the country, and in implementation of the instructions of the President of the Republic, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, to entrust the Ministry of National Defense with handling the process of acquiring aircraft specialized in fighting forest fires, the Ministry of National Defense immediately launched the necessary consultations with world-renowned manufacturers who are able to urgently implement the project and that the choice is made on a Russian factory with a global reputation.

Thus, the relevant services of the Ministry of National Defense started negotiating with this company to reach an agreement on the acquisition, as soon as possible, of four (04) new Russian manufactured multi-role amphibious water bombers of (BE-200 BERIEV-200) type with twin engines and a capacity of 13,000 liters which can be used to fight forest fires in extreme and complex weather conditions.

The statement added, “These world-renowned BE-200 water bombers, have proven their efficacy during their use in fighting forest fires that recently affected many countries of the world and will provide big support to the country’s efforts to fight and confront fires in a quick and effective way.”
