Mohamed Charfi to Algerian TV: Number of candidates for legislative elections reached 24,214 candidates, 70 percent of them have university degrees

President of the Independent National Authority for Elections (ANIE), Mohamed Charfi announced on Tuesday, that the number of candidates for June 12 elections has reached 23054 candidates.

During his intervention on a Live TV program on Channel Three, Mr. Charfi explained that the total number of candidates lists reached 2292, including 1179 political parties’ lists and 1133 independent lists, adding that “the total number of competing candidates is 23054 candidates.”

The president of the Independent National Authority for Elections said that 70 percent of the candidates hold a university degree.

The deadline of candidacies submission for the legislative elections of June 12 expired Tuesday at midnight, in accordance with the order signed by President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, amending and supplementing the organic law on the electoral regime, last Thursday, at the request of the Independent National Elections Authority and after consulting with the State Council and the Constitutional Council and taking in consideration the opinion of the Council of Ministers.
