Official opening of 2021-2022 cultural year in Algeria

Algiers Opera Ballet and the Ahelil Singing Band of Gourara, performed on Thursday, a bouquet of songs and dances from the Algerian heritage as part of the official opening of the 2021-2022 cultural year.

The cultural year 2021-2022, which was hosted by the Opera of Algeria Boualem Bessaïh, was opened by its Director General Fatima Zahra Namous Senoussi, in the presence of the Minister of Culture and Arts Wafaa Chaalal, a number of government members and high officials from various state institutions, in addition to about twenty representatives of the various diplomatic missions accredited in Algeria.

During this evening, a series of choreographic dances, designed and directed by Fatima Zahra Namous Senoussi, and Ahelil songs which is a kind of poetry and music in Al-Zanati language in the Gourara region listed by UNESCO in 2008 as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, was performed.

Before a modest audience, due to the preventive measures against the Corona virus, 16 ballet dancers and 11 dancers performed five dances of the “Qarkabo” type, “Al Raqibat” (Tindouf region), “Tawariq”, “Chawi” and “Kabyli”, while a group of Ahelil performed some spiritual passages which represent the serenity of the soul with its creator.

With the aim of highlighting the diversity and richness of Algeria’s cultural heritage, the Algiers Opera Ballet took the audience on a tour characterized by a mix of dance, music and narration with a melodious voice announcing each scene accompanied by paintings drawn on the sand shown on the big screen of the Opera of Algiers.

This ballet, by the tunes of “Zarna” in the hall, reminded of the richness and cultural diversity of Algeria, its customs and traditions.
