Over 550 successful kidney and stem cell transplants in 2021

Health Minister Abderrahmane Benbouzid announced on Saturday in Algiers that 557 successful kidney and stem cell transplant surgeries were performed during 2021, congratulating this “achievement” carried out by the executives of the National Transplant Agency (ANG) and all the medical teams working on the field.

In his speech at the opening of the symposium devoted to the assessment of organ, tissue and cell transplantation activities, at the headquarters of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), with the participation of experts, Mr. Benbouzid thanked all the executives of the ANG as well as all the medical teams working in the field for “the efforts made”, congratulating “the results obtained, by recording 223 organs, tissues and cells. Benbouzid thanked all the executives of the ANG as well as all the medical teams working in the field for “the efforts made”, welcoming “the results obtained, recording 223 successful kidney transplants and 334 stem cell transplants during the year 2021, despite the suspension of medical and surgical activities due to the waves of Covid-19 pandemic”.

Calling these results a great “achievement”, the Minister of Health said that “living donor transplants cannot meet all the demand, which is increasing each time”.

This is why the Agency is “currently working to relaunch transplants from donors in a state of encephalic death, by involving the teams and sectors concerned, such as Religious Affairs”, but also “professionals from the health and information sectors”, said Mr Benbouzid.

He affirmed that the health sector aims to keep pace with developed countries by integrating digitization into the daily practice of health professionals and by establishing “a computerized national waiting list”.

“Scientific research, to which the Algerian state grants constant interest, particularly through financial and material support, is reflected in the field by the activation of the research unit for the removal and transplantation of organs,” he concluded.
