Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane inaugurates National Seed Bank

The Prime Minister, Mr. Aïmene Benabderrahmane inaugurated Thursday at the National Center for the Control and Certification of Seeds and Seedlings (CNCC) in Algiers, the National Seed Bank.

During the inauguration ceremony which happened in the presence of members of the Government and the Secretary General of the National Union of Algerian Farmers (UNPA), Mr. Benabderrahmane underlined the importance of this Bank in achieving food security of the country through the promotion of national seed production.

The Prime Minister considered that the exclusive use of local production of seeds in agriculture constitutes a major challenge, affirming, in this regard, the importance for the sector to intensify its efforts to meet it.

The Bank is made up of five (5) chambers reserved for plant seeds and animal genes, designed according to precise technical criteria, particularly with regard to temperature and humidity.

Before the inauguration, Mr. Benabderrahmane visited the stands of an exhibition organized on this occasion where he listened to the explanations provided by the directors of the various agricultural institutes on agricultural research in forest and Saharan areas, in addition to livestock animals.

He also inspected the seven CNCC laboratories where the seeds to be stored in the bank are prepared.
