Prioritising medical emergency departments and polyclinics in the redevelopment programmes

Health Minister Abderrahmane Benbouzid stressed on Monday in Algiers the need to prioritise medical emergency services and polyclinics in the redevelopment programmes.

Following presentations by the directors of health in the provinces on projects that have been completed or are in the process of being completed during a videoconference meeting, the minister reiterated the need to speed up the pace of work in order to deliver the projects within the set deadlines, particularly those relating to the creation of centres for medical and surgical emergencies, all specialities combined, and to reorganise polyclinics throughout the country, ensuring that some of them provide 24-hour work.

Mr Benbouzid also insisted on the need to make the necessary changes in the various health establishments, particularly in the gynaecology-obstetrics departments, and to increase the number of beds so as to take care of a maximum number of pregnant women, especially as difficult cases are treated in public hospitals.

The minister stressed, however, the need to catch up on the delay in the completion of some projects due to the health situation related to the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) and to open the maximum during the first half of 2022, following the example of the projects underway in Bordj Bou Arreridj, Oum El Bouaghi, Souk Ahras and Ghardaïa

Referring to the health situation related to Covid-19, Benbouzid said that it was “reassuring and under control”, in the light of the great decrease in the number of new cases and deaths (0 cases).

Recalling that this stable situation has led Algeria to lift some preventive measures, especially at the level of mosques, coinciding with the coming of the holy month of Ramadhan, Benbouzid stressed the need to maintain caution against this virus, in the context of the absence of accurate scientific data on it.

Referring to the exceptional bonus Covid-19 for the benefit of staff in the sector, the minister said that all procedures relating to this operation have been finalized, calling on the directors of health and hospitals that have not yet transferred this bonus, the need to pay it in accordance with the deadlines set by the ministry, namely next Thursday.
