Railway accidents: 49 dead and 56 injured in 2021

Overall, 49 people lost their lives in railway accidents in 2021, an official of the National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) said on Thursday in Algiers.

“No less than 49 people were killed and 56 injured in railway accidents and incidents last year,” SNTF representative Abdelmalek Hamzaoui said at a study day on the railway sector in Algeria, organised by the National Institute for Global Strategic Studies (INESG) and the Transport Ministry.

According to the same figures, 6 people died in accidents at level crossings, 6 others were electrocuted and 37 others were hit by trains.

In addition, SNTF recorded 320 derailments, 47 accidents at crossings, 75 accidents of people colliding and 196 incidents of stone throwing during the past year, according to the same official.
