The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, will participate in the high-level meeting of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will be held in New York from September 20 to 28, 2021, according to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The communiqué stated that “chaired by Mr. Abdulla Shahid, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, this session will be held under the slogan “Betting on Hope to strengthen the response to Covid-19 pandemic, sustainable rebuilding, responding to the needs of the planet, respecting the rights of people and revitalizing the United Nations.”
In the same context, the communiqué added, “In the face of the global health crisis caused by Covid-19 pandemic and the complex and volatile geopolitical context, this session constitutes a special opportunity for member states to renew their commitment to pluralism and international solidarity and to study ways and means to address the current imbalances and establish a comprehensive, just and equitable global governance system.”
The same source announced that “the Foreign Minister will participate on the sidelines of the plenary session in many seminars and high-level meetings, the most important of which are a ministerial meeting on the peace track in Libya and a joint meeting between the Arab Summit Troika and the Security Council, in addition to a summit on the food system, a high-level dialogue on energy and the 12th ministerial symposium on promoting the entry into force of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, not to mention a meeting marking the 20th anniversary of the ratification of the Durban Program of Action on Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Intolerance.”
Ramtane Lamamra will also hold, according to the same source, “talks with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, on issues related to global peace and security and the implementation of the sustainable development goals, especially in the context of the remnants of the Coronavirus pandemic and the ongoing reform process of the United Nations.”
“The chief of diplomacy is expected to meet with many of his counterparts from the member states of the United Nations on bilateral issues and files of common interest at the regional and international levels,” said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.
