Ramtane Lamamra pleads for an end to historical injustice imposed on Africa in Security Council

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, called on Monday, in his intervention before the general debate of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, for the reform of the UN Security Council in order to achieve more transparency and equitable geographical representation and put an end to the historical injustice imposed on the African continent.

In his speech, Mr. Lamamra referred to the circumstances in which the 76th session of the UN Assembly was held, saying, “This session is being held while  the world is witnessing huge challenges that cast a shadow over all aspects of human life.”

The head of the Algerian diplomacy considered that what was left by the Coronavirus pandemic, with its rapid spread and ferocity, with millions of people across the world, bypassing all geographical borders without distinguishing between rich and poor countries, comes at the top of these existential challenges.

In this context, he stressed that the current situation of the world emphasizes more than ever the urgent need to strengthen international cooperation and solidarity and activate multilateral mechanisms of action in a more efficient way to jointly address this pandemic, and lay the foundations for a new world order beyond the Covid-19 pandemic, including standards of justice and equity and ensuring equal participation of all countries without any discrimination.

The Minister pointed out that the topic of this session, which was entitled “Building resilience with hope to recover from Covid-19 pandemic, rebuild sustainability, respond to the needs of the planet, respect human rights and revitalize the United Nations”, carries with it the basic elements, to enhance the prospects for multilateral action, Which is irreplaceable, to bypass this pivotal stage in human history.

Mr. Lamamra added that despite the great challenges posed by this pandemic, it also gives us a historic opportunity to realize the mistakes of the past and draw lessons, allowing us to move forward in building a prosperous future for all of humanity.
