Russia: Gazprom temporarily suspends gas supplies to Europe via North Stream 1

Russian Company Gazprom announced today, Wednesday, in a statement, the suspension of gas transportation to Europe via the North Stream 1 pipeline to carry out maintenance work scheduled from August 31 to September 3.

The Russian state-owned energy company had issued an advance warning that gas shipments would be temporarily suspended today, due to maintenance work, and it is scheduled to resume supply operations early Saturday morning.

Russia has significantly reduced its supplies of natural gas to Europe in recent weeks by reducing North Stream-1 flows and operating by only 20 percent of a pre-agreed level.

About 40 percent of the EU’s gas imports came from Russia until last year, before Gazprom stopped delivering gas to a number of its European customers for refusing to pay in Russian rubles.
