Sixth Meeting of the Presidents of the African Constitutional Courts kicks off

The work of the sixth high-level meeting of the heads of constitutional courts, supreme courts and the African constitutional field, which aims to strengthen judicial, legal and constitutional cooperation among African countries, began today, Saturday, in Cairo,.

The 3-day meeting will discuss a number of axes, including the constitutional protection of the principle of citizenship and the constitutional protection of the rights of immigrants and refugees, constitutional guarantees for the development of natural resources and the role of constitutional oversight in protecting cultural privacy in addition to social justice from an economic perspective, and the role of the constitutional judiciary in protecting the integrity and cohesion of society.

40 African countries are participating in the meeting, which is hosted by the Egyptian Supreme Constitutional Court, represented by 51 heads of the Constitutional Court, the Constitutional Council and the Supreme Court.

Algeria is represented in the work of this meeting by the President of the Constitutional Court, Omar Belhadj.

According to a statement by the Constitutional Court, during this meeting, the topic “The Role of Constitutional Oversight in the Development of African Peoples” will be discussed.

The statement indicated that the President of the Constitutional Court will, by the way, review the Algerian experience in this field through an intervention entitled “Transition from the Constitutional Council system to the Constitutional Court system in Algeria and its impact on the promotion of human rights and citizen freedoms.”
