The President of the Council of the Nation (Upper House), Mr. Salah Goudjil, received on Tuesday the ambassador of the Russian Federation, Valerian Shuvaev, who paid him a courtesy visit during which both sides highlighted the attachment of the two countries to develop their “privileged historical” relations, said a statement of the upper house of parliament.
This meeting, which took place at the headquarters of the Council of the Nation, is part of ” strengthening cooperation relations and the deep strategic partnership between Algeria and Russia at all levels, especially at the parliamentary level supported by the signing on May 14, 2014 of the protocol on bilateral parliamentary cooperation between the Council of the Nation and the Federal Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia “, the statement said.
Speaking on this occasion, Goudjil said that “Algeria is proud of its privileged historical relations with Russia”, stressing “the will of the two heads of state to promote them through new agreements and to strengthen them in the economic and investment fields”.
Furthermore, the Speaker of the upper house of parliament reaffirmed ‘Algeria’s attachment to the immutable principles of its foreign policy calling for non-interference in the internal affairs of countries and the peaceful settlement of conflicts through dialogue, negotiation and reconciliation’.
In this regard, Goudjil called for “reviving the principle of non-alignment to which Algeria is committed, but also the supreme values that result from it, including unconditional support for the causes of liberation around the world and support for peoples for freedom, sovereignty and self-determination,” insisting on “activating the role of this movement in a new form in order to establish balanced international relations,” according to the statement.
For his part, the Russian ambassador hailed the “level of cooperation reflected in the privileged bilateral relations between Algeria and Russia”, affirming “his country’s commitment to preserving this strategic cooperation, as well as its appreciation of the level of understanding reached by the two countries through coordination on several issues of common interest”.
He called, in this context, for “the preservation of this rhythm through the strengthening of parliamentary cooperation in all its aspects”.
To this end, the Russian ambassador in Algiers handed the President of the Council of the Nation an invitation from his Russian counterpart to take part in the 2nd international parliamentary conference “Russia-Africa”, scheduled for 19 and 20 March 2023 in Moscow.
For his part, Goudjil thanked the Russian ambassador for the invitation, taking the opportunity to recall the approach adopted by Algeria towards development in Africa and all types of partnerships, according to the same source.
