Tizi Ouzou fires: Four deaths and three injuries recorded

Four people died and three others were injured in fires that broke out on Monday in several municipalities in Tizi-Ouzou province, according to the local forestry officer.

Youcef Ould Mohamed said that these fires have caused the death of two people in Ath Yenni, one other in Yakourene and a fourth in Azazga. On injuries, the officer said that they are a citizen seriously injured in Ifigha village and two forest guards were injured during the operation to suppress the fires.

The most threatening fires are those of Ath Yenni and Larbaa n’Ath Irathen, where the flames arrived near homes, creating a wave of panic among  people, who left their homes, according to local sources.

Thirty fires have been recorded in several areas of the province, the heat wave and the strong wind that blows on the province spreads the flames and makes extinguishing operations difficult, noted. Mr. Ould Mohamed.

A crisis unit was set up in the province. Reinforcements have been sent from many provinces and firefighting helicopters have been deployed. Several bodies are taking part in the fire extinguishing and rescue operations:  Civil protection, forests guards, National Popular Army, National Gendarmerie, municipalities, the hunters and many citizens.

The Director General of Forests and his counterpart from the Civil Protection Department moved to Tizi-Ouzou and went to the disaster location, said the Province Forest Conservator.
