Turkey: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hits the province of Duzce

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit, at dawn today, Wednesday, Duzce Province, northwestern Turkey, and was felt by residents of Istanbul and neighboring provinces.

According to the Turkish Emergency and Disaster Management Department (AFAD), the earthquake occurred in Gol Yaqa district in Duzce.

The statement indicated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.81 kilometers below the surface of the earth.

No official data has been issued about recording losses due to the earthquake.

Turkey is located on top of major seismic fault lines, and is frequently shaken by earthquakes. It was previously hit by devastating earthquakes, the most devastating of which was in the northwest of the country in 1999, which killed about 18,000 people.
