WHO: COVID-19 cases fall by 17% globally

Coronavirus cases fell by 17 percent worldwide in the week between Jan. 31 and Feb. 6 compared to the previous week, although the global death rate rose by seven percent, according to the World Health Organization’s weekly epidemiological report released on Wednesday.

The report also found that the omicron variant is increasingly prevalent, accounting for nearly 97 percent of all cases recorded on the international virus tracking platform GISAID in the last 30 days.

Overall, the World Health Organization reported more than 19 million new cases of COVID-19 and just under 68,000 new deaths in the week between January 31 and February 6.
