WHO: PCR testing effective in detecting “Omicron” mutant

The World Health Organization has announced that “PCR” testing is effective in detecting the new mutant of the Coronavirus “Omicron”, noting that there are ongoing studies in order to measure the effectiveness of other tools used to diagnose infections with the disease.

The agency added that the number of people who tested positive for the virus has increased in parts of southern Africa which was affected by this mutation, but epidemiological studies are underway to understand whether this is due to Omicron or due to other factors.

The World Health Organization had announced earlier that it was not yet clear whether the new strain of the Coronavirus “Omicron” is more transmissible or causes more serious symptoms compared to other strains, including the highly transmissible and globally spread delta strain.
