Zeghdar: Algeria’s automobile sector will soon experience a “big boost”

The Minister of Industry, Ahmed Zeghdar, affirmed yesterday, Sunday, that the automobile sector in Algeria will experience “a big boost at the end of the current year or the beginning of next year,” explaining that the file of the book of specifications for car dealerships will be presented during the next meeting of the Council of Ministers.

In a statement to the press after the conclusion of the meeting of the Algerian-French high-level governmental committee, Mr. Zeghdar indicated that “the book of specifications is ready and will be presented during the next cabinet adding that  all the directives will be taken into consideration regarding its issuance, which is long-awaited by all dealers”.

In response to a question regarding the date of entry into force of the car import decision, Zeghdar said that this is related to the completion of “organizational” arrangements with the Ministry of Finance regarding customs procedures and others. With regard to the industry, we are negotiating, he said, and there will be major companies soon in this field, which will allow them to manufacture and import.”

It’s worth recalling that the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, had given instruction yesterday, Sunday, while presiding over an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, devoted to the draft Finance Law 2023, to open the way for citizens to import cars for less than three years, in addition to submitting the book of specifications for car dealerships, at the next cabinet meeting, to be settled “before the end of the year”.

He also directed instructions to “allow the foreign manufacturers to import cars to sell them in Algeria” in parallel with “the diligent and field follow-up of the process of establishing a real car industry in Algeria as soon as possible.”
