36th AU Summit resumes in Addis Ababa

The work of the 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) resumed Sunday morning in Addis Ababa with the participation of Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane, as representative of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

On the second and final day of the Summit, African leaders will discuss, behind closed doors, Africa’s key issues, including accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)” and the peace and security situation in Africa, the fight against climate change and food security challenges, in addition to the assessment of the implementation plan of the first decade of the AU Agenda 2063 and the reform of the United Nations Security Council.

In an speech at the ministerial meeting of the Committee of Ten of the African Union (AU) on the reform of the UN Security Council held on the occasion of the 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the AU, read on his behalf by Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to the legitimate right of Africa to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council, stressing its commitment to work relentlessly to make the voice of the continent and its legitimate claims heard.

The President of the Republic also welcomed “the continuous spirit of cooperation and fruitful coordination established between the representatives of the fraternal African countries in the international and regional arenas to make the voice of a unified African position heard “.

In another speech on the report of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on climate change, the President of the Republic said that “African countries must redraw their priorities in the fight against climate change “as a continent with a common destiny.

“We must understand the strategic shift aimed by developed countries to redesign the international framework of climate action away from the principles of Rio guaranteeing emerging countries their right to development,” said President Tebboune.

On the first day of the summit, the rotating chairmanship of the AU was handed over to the President of the Republic of Comoros, Azali Assoumani, by his Senegalese counterpart, Macky Sall.
