Occupied Jerusalem: Algeria is leading Arab efforts to convene emergency meeting of Security Council

Algeria is leading Arab efforts aimed at convening an emergency meeting of Security Council devoted to the latest developments in occupied Palestinian territories, the Algerian delegation in New York said Thursday.

The Ambassador of Algeria to the United Nations, Sofiane Mimouni, in his capacity as President of the Arab Group in New York, accompanied by a delegation from this Arab group, met Thursday with the President of the UN Security Council for this month, the permanent representative of China to the United Nations, in order to discuss the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and to study the possibility of activating the role of the Security Council in this regard.

The same source added that during this meeting, Ambassador Sofiane Mimouni, on behalf of the Arab Group in New York, called on the Security Council to assume its responsibility as a guarantor of international peace and security and to ensure respect for international legitimacy by condemning the measures taken by the Israeli occupation authorities against the residents of the holy city of Jerusalem and the excessive use of force by the occupation forces.

After expressing regret for the Security Council’s inability to take a stand regarding the recent escalation in violence and the systematic campaigns of repression against Palestinians that left hundreds of victims, including children, the Permanent Representative of Algeria called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council to bring all the players to take up their responsibilities and work to protect the innocent Palestinian people through concrete actions on the ground.

On the other hand, and in view of the absence of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres (on a trip to Moscow), a delegation from the Arab Group led by Ambassador Mimouni met Thursday, with Mrs. Maria Louise Ribeiro, Head of the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General, to sensitize UN officials about the seriousness of the situation in the field and urge them to take immediate actions in order to reach a lull as soon as possible, and to fully commit to the process of a the final settlement of the Palestinian issue.

In this context, Ambassador Mimouni called for the reactivation of the existing mechanisms, such as the Quartet and the immediate and unconditional resumption of negotiations in order to reach an agreement that respects the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

It is worth noting that these steps come within the framework of implementing the decision of the Council of Arab Ministers adopted on May 11th, which mandated the Arab Group in New York to launch consultations with the President of the Security Council and the General Assembly, including studying the option of holding an emergency meeting of the General Assembly on Israeli illegal actions in occupied East Jerusalem and in the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories.
