Migrants killed by the Moroccan Makhzen police: Colombian president-elect describes the incident as a “barbaric act”

Colombian President-elect Gustavo Petro has expressed his solidarity with the families of the African migrants who were brutally murdered by the Makhzen police while trying to cross the fence of the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

Gustavo Petro tweeted: “My solidarity goes to all African peoples who are fighting hunger and struggling for life. My solidarity goes to the families of the men and women who were killed in Melilla.”

In another tweet, he called for the “unity of humanity” against what he described as “brutality”, when he commented videos and photos published by human rights organizations showing migrants being oppressed by the Moroccan police.

At least 23 African migrants were killed on June 24, after the Moroccan police used excessive force to prevent them from crossing into the Spanish enclave of Melilla, amid calls for an “immediate” and “independent” investigation into this heinous massacre.

Condemnations continue to poor, as many international bodies, organizations, and political and human rights parties denounced this massacre, which was documented by videos circulated on social media platforms, the violent intervention of the Moroccan police against migrants was transmitted by video and audio.

Last Saturday, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights expressed its “deep indignation” against the tragedy and denounced the “excessive use of force”, saying it was “concerned about the arrest and detention of many migrants in the wake of this sad tragedy.”
