Algeria strongly condemns desecration of Holy Quran in The Hague

Algeria strongly condemned Wednesday the attempt to undermine the symbols of Islam following a serious breach from a far-right leader who tore a copy of the Holy Quran in The Hague (Netherlands), calling on the governments of the countries concerned to take the necessary measures to prevent such provocative acts, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad in a statement.

“Algeria has strongly condemned the attempted attack on the symbols of Islam following a serious slippage by a Dutch official who tore up a copy of the Holy Koran in The Hague (Netherlands),” the statement reads.

Algeria reiterated its condemnation of “the repetition of these provocative acts which have serious consequences for social peace”, calling on the governments of the countries concerned to “take the necessary legal and practical measures to prohibit and repress attacks on religious symbols, to combat hate speech and extremism, and to work to ensure the prevalence of the values of tolerance and living together”, the statement said.

Dutch leader of the far-right anti-Islamic group Pegida, Edwin Wagensveld, tore up and desecrated a copy of the Qur’an in front of the Parliament building in The Hague on Monday.

The incident comes after far-right party leader, Swedish-Danish Rasmus Paladan, burned a copy of the Quran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm on Saturday under police protection that prevented citizens from approaching him while he committed his act.
