Ministry of Defense: An attempt to smuggle in more than 11 quintals of processed cannabis across border with Morocco thwarted

Joint detachments of the People’s National Army, in coordination with various security services, managed, during the period from 22 to 28 June, to thwart attempts to smuggle in significant quantities of drugs across the border with Morocco, estimated at more than 11 quintals of processed cannabis, according to a report issued on Wednesday by of the Ministry of National Defense.

As part of the fight against terrorism, detachments of the National People’s Army arrested “three (03) elements of support for terrorist groups in two separate operations across the national territory.”

In the context of the “operations to combat organized crime and in continuation of the relentless efforts aimed at confronting the scourge of drug trafficking in our country, joint detachments of the National People’s Army, in coordination with various security services in the second and third military regions, arrested 30 drug dealers and thwarted attempts to smuggle in large quantities of drugs across the border with Morocco.” Those quantities are estimated at 11 quintals and 53 kilograms of processed cannabis, while 19 other drug dealers were arrested and 44 kilograms of the same substance and 173,221 hallucinogenic tablets were seized during various operations across the various military regions.

Meanwhile, detachments of the People’s National Army arrested “209 people and seized two (02) Kalashnikov machine guns, a quantity of ammunition, 9 vehicles, 287 electric generators, 203 pressure hammers and 11 tons of raw gold and stones mixture, quantities of explosives, detonation equipment and other equipment used in illegal gold mining operations, in Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Ain Ghezzam, Djanet and Tindouf, while 14 people were arrested and 13 hunting rifles, 13,503 cartridges, 47,820 packets of cigarettes, 11,125 units of various drinks and 37 tons of food destined for smuggling, were seized in Ouargla, El Oued and Ain. Ghezzam, Setif, Tebessa, Batna, Msila and Djelfa.

In a related context, border guards, in coordination with the national gendarmerie, thwarted “attempts to smuggle large quantities of fuel estimated at 52139 liters in Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, El Oued, Tebessa, El Tarf and Souk Ahras, while 166 illegal immigrants of different nationalities were arrested through the national territory.
