The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UFM) met on Monday at the University of Aveiro in Porto (Portugal) to discuss climate change, the environment and sustainable development, according to a Council of the Nation press release.

The meeting was chaired by the President of the Portuguese Parliament, who “discussed with the participants several issues related to the state of the environment in the Mediterranean region, in addition to ways of strengthening cooperation and coordination to face the major challenges imposed by climate change in the region”.

Speaking on the occasion, Senator Chafik Si Ali highlighted “the attention given by Algeria to the issue of the environment and climate change”, calling for “concrete actions to protect the Mediterranean region from the risks of carbon emissions that pollute the environment and threaten development”.

He also stressed the necessity of “the contribution of developed States in terms of financial resources and sound investments, which can reduce the disastrous repercussions of this phenomenon, in addition to helping States to build up resilience”.

The member of the Council of the Nation also called for “incentives to reduce behaviours that generate environmental pollution and encourage investment in clean energy”.
