7 new cases of the mutated “delta” variant of Covid-19 virus have been discovered in the capital Algiers, bringing the total cases discovered so far to 31, according to a statement made today, Monday, by Pasteur Institute of Algeria.
The institute stated that “as part of monitoring the spread of the various mutated strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, 07 new cases of the mutated strain Delta (B.1.617.2) have been recorded, since June 20, in the capital of Algeria, bringing the total number of confirmed cases infected with this variant, since last May 03, to 31 cases.”
In the same connection, Pasteur Institute presented the percentages of the spread of the different strains classified as either “strains of concern” or “strains under surveillance” according to the classification of the World Health Organization, and which are currently present in Algeria, and which were detected in all positive PCR samples, during the second quarter of the current year.
The same source explained, in this regard, that for the strains of concern, 50.47% of “alpha” strain B.1.1.7) and 2.63% of the “delta” strain B.1.617.2) were recorded.
As for the strains under control, the statement adds, “44.18% of the strain “Eta” (B.1.525) and 2.72% of the strain “A” (A.27) that was discovered recently have been recorded.”
In view of the increase in the number of cases of Covid-19 recorded during the past days, Pasteur Institute renewed its call for the need to be “vigilant and strictly adhere to the basic rules stipulated in the health protocol such as wearing protective masks, physical distancing and frequent washing of hands to limit the spread of the virus and its mutated strains.”.
