President of the Republic visits exhibition of products of Algerian craftswomen

The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune highlighted Wednesday the need to protect the Algerian legacy of imitation during a visit to an exhibition of products of Algerian craftswomen, held at the International Conference Center (CIC) “Abdellatif-Rahal” (Algiers) on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

President Tebboune visited this exhibition on the sidelines of the ceremony organised in honour of a host of women who have distinguished themselves in many sectors, highlighting during his discussions with exhibitors, the contribution of craftswomen in the enhancement of Algerian heritage, marginalised in the past, which has exposed it “to theft and attempts to appropriate”.

In this regard, he stressed the need to “develop and protect Algerian heritage through its classification as a safeguarded intangible heritage within the framework of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)”.

Highlighting the need to “protect the national heritage and traditional dress, such as the ‘Chedda’, from imitation”, the President of the Republic pointed to the classification of this type of garment as part of the Algerian heritage, through “a certificate of conformity granted by the Government to the craftswomen and to be published in the Official Gazette”.

President Tebboune has, in this context, expressed ” the State’s willingness to support and assist craftswomen in the sale of traditional products “, noting the importance of ” promoting the Algerian product through a wide participation in international exhibitions “.
